Dan Duckham is a lion of midcentury architecture in Fort Lauderdale, creating exquisite subtropical architecture suitable to the place and the climate. This four bedroom, three bath, 2,168 square foot house in Wilton Manors, FL, with heated pool, and lush landscaping, centered around a central courtyard, just hit the market for $695,000, and boy is it a treat.

The house was originally built in 1964 as a duplex for a “single lady realtor,” with the two story back house for her and the front to rent, according to Dan Duckham’s personal website, danduckham.com. Meanwhile, “Thirty four years later another bachelor bought it and altered it, bit by bit, until it finally became one house,” says Mr. Duckham.

The way Mr. Duckham describes his clients is fascinating on its own. Located at 1459 NE 23 Street, in Wilton Manors, one of the most LGBT-friendly city’s in the country, ‘bachelor’ could be a polite euphemism, for all we know. Interestingly, he also pointed out the original owner, a realtor, was a lady, and single. Come now, Mr. Duckham!

Known as the Gregory Duplex or Kraus House, according to Duckham at the time of its construction it was “a very inexpensive stacked block and flat roof post & beam structure,” that nonetheless came out stunning. The sweeping, open living spaces create a striking visual connection to the outside pool, and connect the various areas of the house to each other. Meanwhile, many of the original details remain in pristine and well-loved condition, including the bathrooms, enhancing the historic character of the house.

Check out listing photos, and original historic photos of the house, via Dan Duckham, below. Also, check out this other well-preserved Dan Duckham house that hit the market last year for just under $1 million.
