Balinese Resort-Style Compound in West Palm Beach Wants $22 Million

Located on just under an acre of land, extremely close to the sweeping Lake Worth views of S. Flagler Drive, but on a leafy and extremely quiet dead-end street, this Balinese compound was built in 1950, yet has been thoroughly updated for contemporary life. Located at 250 Essex Lane, does that updating, along with the obscene excesses of today’s real estate market, justify a $22 million price tag, however?

The compound is comprised of two separate, fully renovated houses clustered around a lagoon-style pool, with a surplus of shaded lanais, covered breezeways, and comfortable indoor/outdoor living spaces. A large outdoor shower adds a sexy vibe, while huge banyan trees and tropical palms provide shade and privacy for the lawn and tennis court. Rich Burmese teak is used nicely throughout the property, but it’s put to a particularly great effect in the wet bar area of the game room, where one might have a very dry martini with the panache of a midcentury titan. Ironically, one didn’t have to be a titan of industry to own this spread until quite recently. The house, which has been on the market since May for $22 million, was last sold in 2015 for $650,000. That’s one princely markup.
