The Hall South Beach, a boutique hotel in a cluster of historic art deco buildings that was just completely renovated a couple years ago, has been purchased by Axel Hotels, a mostly European chain of gay-oriented hotels with locations in Berlin, Ibiza, Barcelona, and Madrid. Now called the AxelBeach Miami, although the property is already pretty nice, it is unsurprisingly being renovated again and will reopen later this year.
Reports, probably from publicists, are that the hotel is planning to reopen this summer. However, someone with connections with the City of Miami Beach building department has said that it won’t be open until October or November. That’s probably more likely.
The main part of the hotel is located in the historic Haddon Hall, a three-story art deco hotel that faces Collins Avenue. According to misterb&b, a gay travel site, “The hotel will feature three separate two- and three-storey [sic] modules, boast 159 rooms, restaurant, fitness and spa area, lounge bar and rooftop sky bar.” The current hotel doesn’t have a sky bar, so that definitely will be new.
The Axel will be Miami Beach’s second ‘gay’ hotel, following in the footsteps of the Gaythering, which is about eight or nine blocks away and very popular with Miami Beach locals. This, of course, is due to the efforts its owners put into the community. It will be interesting to see how the Axel establishes itself on the scene.
