Miami Beach’s high stakes real estate market can sometimes put older, architecturally significant houses in jeopardy due to the market’s demand for the newest, the biggest, and the most tricked out. This makes the preservation and restoration of older houses on the brink of demolition all the more significant.
The 84 year old Art Deco house at 6332 Alton Road is one of those significant properties saved from the wrecking ball, and has been preserved and meticulously renovated. The Art Deco house was saved from the brink of demolition by determined preservationists and a sympathetic buyer at the last minute, and restored to its original glory. It’s now on the market for $5.6 million.
Built in 1934, it was designed by architects John and Coulton Skinner of noteworthy firm Skinner & Skinner. At the time, it was significant enough to be published in the magazine American Architect in 1935. Gorgeous original Art Deco details are preserved, like octagonal windows, a grand 24-foot-tall living room with fireplace, and a floating circular staircase.
Originally a rather small house, the renovations sensitively enlarged it to a more sizable 4,860 square feet. It now features 4 bedrooms, 4.5 baths, a large eat-in kitchen, a spa-like master bath, and a swimming pool. 6332 Alton is listed by Nancy Batchelor of EWM Realty.
