Feel like some local culture on your commute to work? Try out one of these fantastic local podcasts.

Biscayne Tales

Modeled after the New York-based ‘Battery Boys’ podcast, the two Miamians behind Biscayne Tales, Carlos Rico and Mark Guzman, present the history of Miami in a fun, interesting, and accessible way. Each episode focuses on a single aspect of Miami and its history, some well known and some obscure, like Coral Castle, Julia Tuttle, the Tequesta, and Islandia. The accompanying website provides more historical information and photographs related to each episode.

The Miami History Podcast

Dr. Paul George, a giant among Miami historians, and fellow historian Casey Piket, are the hosts of the Miami History Podcast, which delves into Miami history with the eye of two seasoned experts. For each episode they explore a single topic, period, or historical event–many of which overlap with Piket’s excellent Miami History blog. When not podcasting or blogging, Piket assists George with much of his historical and academic work across South Florida, and their combined expertise is evident as they explore Miami’s history on the show.

Miami Hustle

Miami is a vibrant city for entrepreneurs and startups, and the Miami Hustle podcast is a venue where many of them share what they’ve done and how they’ve done it. “Hear stories from Miami locals who’ve hustled their way out of the 9-to-5 and are creating businesses that are transforming Miami into a hub of entrepreneurship and innovation. Learn how they found a profitable business idea, branded themselves for success, achieved financing from VCs and angels, and are creating business that are ‘building a new Miami.’”

Sh*t Miami Girls Say

Remember that viral video called Sh*t Miami Girls Say? Well. those crazy kids have gone corporate, bro. They’ve got a FB page with, like, almost 10,000 ‘likes’ and a podcast, appropriately also called ‘Sh*t Miami Girls Say.’ It’s delicious. Plus, like true locals, they haven’t decamped to L.A. for more entrepreneurial social media pastures like other born-and-bred Miamians (coughjennylorenzocough). These amazing chongas are “Just three Miami girls sprinkling some sazón on this basic, papa sin sal, life.”

Planted in Miami

Planted in Miami is “a podcast about conscious living in the Magic City. Every other week, hosts Alex and Jeanette, interview inspiring locals pushing the city forward through their actions. You’ll hear from entrepreneurs, activists, community leaders, athletes, chefs and more who are working hard at changing the way people view Miami.” Planted explores the entrepreneurial and start-up spaces in Miami, but it also goes beyond that by interviewing anyone who is doing interesting things to make Miami a better place. Check out their website for more info.
