The Wolfsonian-FIU Museum, which has an extensive Art Deco collection has announced something everybody probably assumed it did years ago, its first-ever major Art Deco exhibition. Check it out.
Internationally renowned designer Karim Rashid, king of the candy-colored woggle-shaped everything, has put his South Beach vacation place on the market for $589,000. The two bedroom condo, believe it or not, is actually designed in a more subdued version of Rashid at full flower. Yet it's still deliciously 'him.' The Hall South Beach, a boutique hotel in a cluster of historic art deco buildings that was just completely renovated a couple years ago, has been purchased by Axel Hotels, a mostly European chain of gay-oriented hotels with locations in Berlin, Ibiza, Barcelona, and Madrid. Now called the AxelBeach Miami, although the property is already pretty nice, it is unsurprisingly being renovated again and will reopen later this year.
When the two tall, white townhouses were built behind the Bass Museum in 2006 and designed by Miami architect Chad Oppenheim, they were a bit of an enigma. They're on the market now for $6 million for the pair.
A few years ago. architect Rene Gonzalez designed the interiors and build-out of Unit 3701 at Icon South Beach for Ion Varouxakis, a Greek shipping magnate (yes, yes, that's a very Greek thing to be) who wanted an apartment modeled after his historic sailing yacht.
If you were lucky enough to enter Art Basel Miami Beach this year through the VIP entrance you got a little treat: a mini construction tour through the future grand lobby of the Miami Beach Convention Center. The whole thing, although not a very long tour, was pretty cool. It began in the Miami Beach Botanical Garden, crossed Meridian Avenue, which is closed to traffic and the public during construction, and then shot through one side of the lobby, down a back hallway, and into the convention center. The removal of a former service yard (along with, sadly, the felling of a few majestic trees by Hurricane Irma) has expanded Flamingo Park in the heart of South Beach by quite a lot.
